Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Fact Sheet

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible Flint Community Schools employees to take job-protected leave for qualifying family and medical reasons, with continued benefit coverage. This federal law provides up to 12 weeks of leave within 12 months for reasons such as the birth or adoption of a child, caring for a family member with a serious health condition, or attending to personal medical needs.

Flint Community Schools partners with BASIC, a third-party FMLA administrator, to handle requests and ensure a smooth process. BASIC will send the necessary forms directly to employees. During FMLA leave, employees must use their accumulated paid time off (PTO) to receive pay.

For more information about FMLA eligibility, guidelines, and how to apply, don't hesitate to contact the Human Resources department.
